Coventry Green Fayre Event Launched

August 23, 2010 Leave a comment

Coventry held its first Green Fayre event (please see website link 1 below) on Saturday 21 August 2010.

Great turnout! I met some lovely people.

Please see website link 2 below for details of the local Green businesses who ran their stalls.

Useful reminder for me too – as much as we want to help make a difference, it can be only done one step at a time…

Schools Low Carbon Day – Climate Change and Green IT

June 24, 2010 Leave a comment

Today it was Schools Low Carbon Day in the UK.  It had been arranged by Cool the World (please see website link 1 below), which is a voluntary organisation formed by a group of parents.

I assisted the Schools Eco-Co-Ordinator at the primary school in Coventry.

The main purpose today was to educate the children about climate change, focus them on their own energy usage and to ensure the children and their family make pledges to reduce their own carbon footprint.

A presentation was given in the assembly by myself and the Schools Eco Co-Ordinator, with a lot of involvement and participation from the children. We went through slides on climate change, the impact of what we’re doing, Green IT and ways to reduce carbon footprint.

It was great to see how much the children knew and what they can now go back and tell their parents to do to reduce carbon emissions and energy costs (those bills!).

Following on from the assembly, the children were tasked with designing leaflets to do with pledges to reduce the carbon footprint. An incentive had been given (companies should also note incentives do work), and the winners were notified on Monday 28 June 2010.

Also, one class even nominated two people to be responsible to turn lights off when the room is vacant or there is enough natural light. Green Champions!

When giving a talk on Green IT, all the children responded (LOTS of hands up in the hall) they could not stop using PCs as there is a dependency on it for school work and home usage.  However, they do now know what changes to make to reduce the impact IT has on the environment, and most are quick wins which I am positive they will implement.

I have always said children need more awareness and also believe they can teach their parents on what they learn.  It does affect their future after all…

Overall, it was a great day and I feel we have collaborated and made a difference together…be it small or big, it still matters…
